Meet Theresa

Admiralty Attorney

I have had the privilege of providing value added services to the yachting community since 1993.

My clients can be assured that I will guide them to practical, cost-effective, business-based decisions whether resolving disputes, structuring transactions or managing their marine-related enterprises.

As a seasoned litigator, I recognize the advantages of avoiding costly trials. Of equal importance, however, is the ability to maintain settlement incentive by ensuring that opposing parties and counsel know I am well prepared for trial on my client’s behalf, should settlement fail.
Client-focused achievements have included:

  • Recovery of millions of dollars in wrongly obtained marine and real estate assets;
  • Navigated U.S. Coast Guard regulations in the operation of commercial and pleasure vessels to allow operation in the coastwise trade;
  • Safeguarded client’s yacht-in-progress from the threat of builder’s potential bankruptcy;
  • Negotiated foreign yacht construction contracts;
  • Secured Maritime Lien protection for yacht owners and vendors;
  • Structured Charter Parties (Agreements) in the U.S.;
  • Litigated and Resolved Crew Injuries, Jones Act and Wage Claims;
  • Obtained significant recoveries in Boating Accident and Personal Injury cases;
  • Managed refit and launching of gaming ships.

Certifications and Memberships:

I maintain the following certifications and memberships to ensure that my clients will receive advice that incorporates the most current issues in the maritime and admiralty field:

  • Board certification in Maritime and Admiralty Law by the Florida Bar (2011-2021);
  • Chair of the Florida Bar Maritime and Admiralty Law Certification Committee (2017-18 term)(Vice chair 2016-17)
  • General Counsel to American Vessel Documentation Association;
  • Member, International Yacht Brokers Association
  • Member, National Marine Lenders Association
  • Member, Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute
  • Member, Florida Bar Admiralty Committee

Aside from marine interests, I volunteer with Catholic Legal Services and the Veterans Pro Bono Project.

My husband Ken Basilio (USAF, Ret.) and I enjoy Cat VI travel, home improvement, our labradoodle, Teddy, and keeping our old Grady White afloat and running,
