Meet Michael

Maritime Litigation Attorney

A South Florida admiralty attorney concentrating in maritime litigation and yacht commercial issues, I have handled a wide range of matters including contract disputes, seizure of vessels, foreclosures, salvage, collision, crew claims, warranty matters, shipyard claims, purchase and commission disputes and insurance claims.

I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Miami in Marine Affairs and in Economics and later graduated from the University of Miami School of Law. I am a member of the Florida Bar, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, the U. S. District Courts for the Northern, Middle and the Southern Districts of Florida.

I have received an “AV” peer rating by Martindale Hubbell, the highest rating for attorneys. I have been designated as a Proctor in Admiralty by the Maritime Law Association of the United States. I am also a member of the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute, and the past President of the Marine Council of Greater Miami. At present, I am also an arbitrator and a member of the board of the Miami Maritime Arbitration Council. Additionally, I am a founding member and past General Counsel for the United States Super Yacht Association. I have also served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the Florida Department of Natural Resources.

An adjunct professor at the University of Miami School of Law, I currently teach Admiralty Law, Marine Personal Injury and Marine Ecology and the Law and have been a contributor to the Marine Business Journal and Southern Boating magazines.

I grew up sailing on Biscayne Bay and worked as a yacht broker before going to law school. I am married to Debbie Karcher and have two daughters, Caitlin Jayne and Kelly Jean.
